Brewing Coffee Like a Barista: Tips for Making the Best Cup at Home

Brewing like a barista in your own kitchen is easier than you think. Follow these steps to make the best cup of coffee you’ve had in a long time.

There is something magical about a perfect cup of coffee. The way the barista brews it so perfectly, the smell, the way the delicious taste takes over… it can be a truly inspired moment. Did you know that with the right tools, you could make that perfect cup for yourself in your own home? All you need are some good quality beans, a coffee grinder, a pour over coffee dripper and a filter.

Steps to the Best Coffee You’ve Ever Made

Follow these steps and you will be amazed at the quality of coffee that you are capable of making:

1) Gather the tools

You will need just a few simple things, but they are important:

• Beans – Use good quality beans. Cafes often sell the beans that their baristas use, so consider buying a bag of beans from your favorite cafe.
• Grinder – Don’t cheap out on the grinder. Find a good one that will grind your beans instead of bruising them.
• Pour over coffee dripper – This is very important. Look for a pour over coffee dripper that is ceramic and has spiral ribbed side walls. It should also have one large hole at the bottom.
• High-quality filters- Don’t cheap out on the filters unless you like the taste of paper in your coffee. Use premium paper cone size #2 filters made of high-quality wood pulp.

2) Warm up

Warm up your pour over coffee dripper and wet the empty filter with some hot water before you begin brewing your coffee.

3) Grind the beans

Grinding the beans can be a bit of a trial and error. For use in a pour over coffee dripper, try not to grind it too finely. Other than that, it is up to you and your own tastes.

4) Fill the filter

Deciding how much of the ground coffee to put into the filter can also be a bit of a trial and error. Start with about 1:17 ratio of coffee to water (in weight). Or if you want something less technical, try one heaped scoop in your pour over coffee dripper to start and go from there. Over time, you will figure out if you prefer more or less coffee per cup.

5) First pour

Using water that is about 205 degrees, gently moisten the grounds in your pour over coffee dripper. Baristas call this the bloom pour.

6) Complete the pour

After you have bloomed the grounds, start gently pouring the hot water over the grounds in your pour over coffee dripper in a steady, circular motion. This takes a little practice, but it is extremely satisfying. Pour until your cup is full.

7) Drink, tweak and repeat

Tweak the amount of coffee you put in your pour over coffee dripper, try a different grind size or even experiment with the temperature of the water. All of these elements will change the taste of your final product.
